Saravana Bhavan

Last weekend was one of those weekends where we as a family just could not decide where we wanted to go for dinner. We definitely did not want anything cheesy or meaty or anything connected with fine dining. So what do we do??? And then, Ta Dah ( as my daughter would say), let's go to Saravana Bhavan!

In all my years I never have or would imagine writing a review for Saravana Bhavan! If anyone had asked me, if I was still living in India, "hey, Saravana Bhavan pollam maa ( Shall we go to Saravana Bhavan) ??" I would have given them the 'Are you crazy?!' expression.

Saravana Bhavan, in Tamilnadu, India, is what we would call a tiffin place. We would go for a quick breakfast or a light meal during the office break or a pit stop during road trips on the motor way. It definitely was not a dinner place to go to. My childhood had Saravana Bhavan in it, I remember going there every morning for breakfast during our stay in Madras, now Chennai, and ordering a Ghee roast and Carrot juice. It later became my Sunday brunch spot with my grandmother after church.

Since then, Saravana Bhavan has grown into an international chain of restaurants and it brings with it a taste of South Indian Tiffin, in other words a light meal. I am going to list their features and tell you what we ordered so you can decide if you want to make it your next dinner destination.
  • South Indian vegetarian food ( Do not back out yet!)
  • They have a bar.
  • Service is quick
  • All dishes come with a serving of Chutney(s) and sambar/ vegetable korma.
  • Make a booking, especially if it is a large number, as the restaurant gets crowded by 7.00pm
  • A look at the menu here .
  • The bill is easy on your wallet.
  • Free underground parking.
A look at what we ordered

Clockwise: Ghee masala roast, Paratta, Medhu Vada (made from lentils and it is crispy) and Rava keseri (A sweet dish made out of semolina)
We had ordered sweet lassi ( sweetened yoghurt) but I do not have picture of it.

I do hope you go here and have a fun evening and also get a taste of South Indian Tiffin.
